Education dept to clean 60 schools on Mandela Day

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

Pretoria - Senior managers from the Gauteng Department of Education will trade their formal attire for overalls to clean 60 schools across the province to celebrate Mandela Day.

MEC for Education Barbara Creecy will on Sunday join the community of Daveyton in cleaning a local school, Dan Pharasi Primary School.

On 18 July, individuals and organisations around the world will spend at least 67 minutes doing good work in their own communities in honour of the 67 years Nelson Mandela gave in service and sacrifice.

The objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better and in doing so build a global movement for good.

Ultimately it seeks to empower communities everywhere "Take Action; Inspire Change; Make Every Day a Mandela Day".

The department has invited members of the public to donate their time over the weekend to assist with the cleaning of schools, cutting grass, removing weeds, cleaning windows and toilets as part of the celebrations for the day.

Creecy will on 18 July 2012 celebrate the day with learners and sing the birthday song for the former President at Japie Greyling Primary School in Randvaal, Sedibeng.

The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory has also joined forces with the National Department of Education in the "94 Projects for Madiba" in celebration of Mandela's 94th birthday.

Ninety-four schools in need of infrastructure development were identified for urgent assistance when the campaign started three months ago.
