President Cyril Ramaphosa has wished South Africa’s Muslim community well during the holy month of Ramadan, which starts this week.
“The importance and benefits of this Holy Month of fasting, piety and charity extends beyond the lives of Muslims, as it contributes to the spiritual and social wellbeing of all South Africans,” said President Ramaphosa on Sunday in a statement.
“This is a month that allows all of us to reflect on - and act on - the small, thoughtful things we can do to contribute to a better society,” he said.
The President said his thoughts go out to the Muslim community of Verulam in KwaZulu-Natal in particular, who suffered violence and tragedy in a place of worship several days ago.
According to KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, at about 2pm on Thursday, three unknown men entered the mosque on the Old Main Road in Ottawa after the midday prayer.
They allegedly attacked three people and stabbed them. They further set certain rooms alight before fleeing in a getaway vehicle.
The victims were taken to hospital for medical attention. One of the victims succumbed to his injuries on arrival at the hospital.
President Ramaphosa said on Sunday he expects the perpetrators will be brought to book and that the community of Verulam will be able to experience Ramadan as the period of peace and goodwill it is meant to be. - SAnews.gov.za
