Stage set for US presidential inauguration ceremony

Friday, January 20, 2017

Pretoria - Hundreds of thousands of Americans have descended on Washington, DC, for Republican Donald Trump's swearing-in as that nation's 45th President.

DC’s Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management says it is expecting between 800 000 and 900 000 people to attend the ceremony later today.

At 7pm South African time, Trump will recite the 35-word oath of office with his hands on two Bibles - one owned by President Abraham Lincoln and one given to him by his mother.

Trump's personal Bible was a gift from his mother when he finished Sunday Church Primary School days before his ninth birthday, while the Lincoln Bible, stored at the Library of Congress, has only been used during the swearing in of two other Presidents.

The day features a long list of official and semi-official events and celebrations. - SAnews.gov.za-Xinhua
