Pretoria - In an effort to bring crime prevention services closer to the people living in Phola in Mpumalanga, Eskom’s Kusile power station has donated a police station to the community.

The Kusile power station project, in partnership with KCW JV contractor, on Friday donated the Phola Police Station to the Minister of Police, Nkosinathi Nhleko. He received the facility on behalf of the community.

The construction and full operation of the police station came after a request from the Phola community who could not readily get police protection. The community could also not access basic police services and had to travel more than 10km to the nearest police station.

“We are honoured and delighted to be donating the police station to the Phola community, building a lasting legacy of safe communities,” said Eskom.

The construction of the station, valued at R3 million, has created job opportunities and empowered people with skills and knowledge on how to create a safer environment.

Eskom’s Group Executive for Group Capital Abram Masango said the Kusile project is committed to changing lives in the Nkangala district one community at a time.

Minister Nhleko said the South African Police Service is determined and focused on eradicating crime while working closely with the community, “because on our own, we cannot win the war against crime”.

The Minister urged the community to work together with the police to fight crime and create a safer environment.
