Learners warned ahead of “pens down” parties

Pretoria – Police in KwaZulu-Natal have sent a stern warning to learners who are planning to attend “pens down” parties to celebrate the closure of schools for the mid-year break.

Learners have been urged not to get on the wrong side of the law.

“Police will be deployed in most hotspots and beaches to make sure that those who are found consuming drugs or alcohol are arrested,” said police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.

Zwane said in April this year, a number of parties were organised by learners and at some of the parties, teens were said to be using drugs known as ‘Mercedes’ and ‘Lacosta’, which resulted in deaths in KwaMashu and other areas.

“Other pupils were admitted in hospital for treatment after allegedly using these drugs. A man was also arrested recently in Pinetown for selling these drugs to young people.

“Police will be deployed in all recreational parks to monitor and ensure that no alcohol is used in those areas,” said Zwane.

He encouraged community members to inform the police of suspected drug dealers. – SAnews.gov.za
