Pretoria - Twenty-one of the initial 23 people arrested in connection with public violence and malicious damage to property are expected to appear in the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court, this morning.

Police say they had initially arrested 23, but two of them had since been released as they could not be linked to the crimes.

Twenty schools were burnt down, while four were damaged while tribal offices, a satellite police station, and a Post Office were also torched, while vehicles were also damaged during a violent week-long protest in and around Vuwani, in Vhembe district, in Limpopo.

The residents in the area want the Municipal Demarcation Board to reverse its decision to incorporate Vuwani into a new municipality.

Calm was restored on Sunday as police maintained a strong presence. However, public transport services and businesses remained closed in the area. – SAnews.gov.za
