Pretoria - Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Jeff Radebe, has welcomed the new press club, saying it will play an invaluable role in advancing media in South Africa.
The new forum for journalists and communication professionals, in partnership with the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), was launched in Cape Town, today.
“This club provides the kind of platform that is needed to have the kind of conversations that will help steer us towards a more inclusive future. You, as the media, occupy a very special place in our maturing democratic society. You are the purveyors of information but you are also the voice of the voiceless,” said Minister Radebe.
The Minister called on the media, as an agent of change, to help ensure that the project of constructing a non-racial and non-sexist society stays on course.
“We can never, ever again condone racist or ethnic chauvinism in our beloved South Africa,” he said.
He reminded media that they play a pivotal role in building an active citizenry in the country. “I would dearly like to see this press club extend a helping hand to your community peers wherever possible as they work to build a more active citizenry at the grass root levels.” - SAnews.gov.za
