Pretoria – The board of the South African Post Office (Sapo) will ensure that the Public Protector’s remedial actions, which came after investigations into the parastatal, are fully implemented.
“The report marks a major milestone in the restoration of normality and confidence-building at the SA Post Office,” Sapo chairperson Dr Simo Lushaba said in a statement on Tuesday.
Public Protector Thuli Madonsela reportedly found that Sapo's acquisition of a R161 million ten-year lease in 2010 for its head office building in Centurion, Gauteng, was unlawful as it contained a number of procurement irregularities.
According to media reports, the report, which is entitled 'Postponed Delivery', also found that the company incurred fruitless and wasteful expenditure in upfront rental towards Centurion's Eco Point Park building before occupation.
Sapo reportedly made rental payments from May 2010 to March 2011 totalling R22 million prior to occupying the building.
“Furthermore, the report adds a critical impetus to the turnaround of the SA Post Office, which is already in progress, having been set in motion during the administration period and taken forward with the appointment of the new Board of Directors and senior executives, including the new Group CEO.
“We are confident that its release and implementation of the remedial actions will assist in focusing all our energies on taking the SA Post Office forward,” Lushaba said. – SAnews.gov.za
