Pretoria - Customs control officials have made two separate busts of ephedrine and abalone valued at more than R10 million, according to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

“In the first, a routine inspection led to the arrest of a Tanzanian male passenger from Dar Es Salam who was carrying two pieces of luggage,” said the revenue service on Tuesday.

During an inspection of the bags, seven transparent bags were discovered containing a crystal substance that turned out to be Ephedrine, weighing 26kg with a street value of R8 100 000.

“The passenger and contents were handed over to SAPS for further investigation,” said SARS.

In a second incident, a detector dog again identified a consignment of abalone worth R2 million at OR Tambo International Airport.

“Investigations revealed dry abalone hidden in Sheen wrap weighing 577kg valued at R2 019 500. This was handed over to SAPS for further investigations.” – SAnews.gov.za
