Pretoria – The Gauteng Department of Health says it will cooperate with the authorities following an incident where a psychiatric patient had allegedly raped a 39-year-old patient at the South Rand Hospital on Wednesday.
According to the hospital authorities, the 59-year-old psychiatric patient was discharged on the day of the incident.
The incident occurred at the accident and emergency unit while the patient was waiting to be transferred to a ward.
A patient who witnessed the incident alerted employees, who swiftly intervened. The Police were called in and attended the complaint accordingly. Investigations are continuing.
“The Department regrets the incident and will fully cooperate with authorities to ensure that the case is dealt with expeditiously.
“We will be offering counselling to all the affected parties,” said Gauteng Health MEC, Ms Qedani Mahlangu. – SAnews.gov.za
