E Cape makes strides in housing delivery

Monday, November 30, 2015

Pretoria – The Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements says it is making good progress in delivering on the target it set at the beginning of the year.

The provincial department has set a target of delivering 13 100 free housing subsidies and to date, 5 946 quality houses have been handed over to the beneficiaries between April and September 2015.

“Of these, 2 709 houses were built in the villages of Alfred Nzo and OR Tambo Districts – spending R1, 096 billion from the department’s conditional grant.

“The housing delivery prioritised the elderly, disabled, military veterans as well as people who qualify for free housing subsidies in six different regions of the province. For rural houses, water harvesting tanks and latrines were provided to ensure equity in provision of public services,” said MEC for Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August.

The department has also issued 2 488 title deeds, which is security of tenure and ownership for beneficiaries.

Further, 1 854 defective houses were rectified and 6 018 services were installed as part of connecting water and sanitation services for beneficiaries.

“We are on course to meet and hopefully exceed our targets for this financial year,” said MEC Sauls-August.

The department is also targeting to issue 7 000 title deeds and to fix 2 311 defective houses in the province. – SAnews.gov.za
