Wednesday, November 18, 2015

Pretoria - An orphanage in Mdantsane has been upgraded to include a R1.7 million dining hall and kitchen.

The need for a new kitchen and dining hall for the Masizakhe Children’s home was first identified in December 2013 through a public participation programme.

Officials at the time witnessed the dire situation the children’s home was in – with limited space and cooking of meals. The home also did not have access to Information Technology and Communication equipment.

The kitchen and dining hall will be officially handed over on Saturday by Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises Bulelani Magwanishe, Deputy Minister of Communications Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams and Chairperson of the Transnet Board, Linda Mabaso.

Transnet built a kitchen and dining hall for the children while the Department of Communications donated tablets with educational content for the children to be technologically connected.

The handing over of the building coincides with the World Children’s Day, held under the theme: Promoting Children’s Rights. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the children charter.

The aim of the National Children's Day celebration is to highlight progress being made towards the realisation and promotion of rights of children. – SAnews.gov.za
