Pretoria - A British national faces extradition after he was arrested by South African police in Greymont, Johannesburg, on Wednesday.

The 69-year-old, whose identity cannot be revealed because his crimes involve minors, is facing multiple charges of a sexual nature in his home country.

“He is being sought by the UK’s law enforcement authorities where he is facing 12 charges of indecent assault and sexual offences involving minors.

“The suspect is alleged to have committed these crimes between 1972 and 1999 before he came to South Africa,” police spokesperson, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, said on Thursday.

The local Interpol team became aware of his presence in the country in 2014 after they were approached by their UK colleagues for assistance.

“It was only after he was arrested that the police in South Africa became aware that he had been here for several years,” said Naidoo.

The man appeared in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court today. His case has been postponed to 16 November 2015. - SAnews.gov.za
