Pretoria - Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula has expressed shock at the passing away of former African Cup of Nations and Africa Nations Championships Local Organising Chief Executive Officer Mvuzo Mbebe.
“I am saddened by the loss of a treasure in South African sport. We have lost one of our most talented sport administrators. Mvuzo over the years contributed immensely in South African sport, from fighting against the injustices of apartheid’s segregation laws to administering and developing sport in a democratic dispensation,” said Minister Mbalula on Tuesday.
The former 2013 African Cup of Nations chief executive and SABC executive died on Monday in hospital.
“We stand firm on the shoulders of this giant and salute him as a gallant fighter whose name will never be forgotten because of his positive contribution to our society. I send my deepest condolences to his family, friends and the entire sporting fraternity,” said the Minister.
He said Mbebe was exemplary and that all in the sporting fraternity should emulate him.
Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha also expressed her condolences to Mbebe’s family.
“Mbebe’s death is an enormous loss not only to his family but to the country as a whole. His abilities as a sport administrator were beyond question. He was a role model to many in his field.
“The country has indeed been robbed of his exceptional talent and skills,” said Sibhidla Saphetha. - SAnews.gov.za
