Review of gambling industry on the cards

Pretoria – The Gauteng province is looking at ways to optimise the gambling industry’s revenue collection which may include introducing a new tariff structure and reviewing taxes for the industry.

Last year, the gambling industry contributed R883 million to Gauteng’s revenue.

“The gambling industry, which spends considerable amounts of money on social investment, can play a more meaningful role in injecting resources and increasing opportunities for income generation in townships,” said Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, Lebogang Maile.

New members appointed to Gambling Board

New members of the Gauteng Gambling Board were appointed on Thursday.

MEC Maile said the board must place greater emphasis on black ownership in the industry, skills development, small business development and the growth of township enterprises.

The gambling board has the task of regulating the industry, issuing licenses and ensuring that the industry operates within the parameters of the law.

Mxolisi Zwane was appointed as the board’s Chairperson, while Shaila Hari will serve as the new deputy chairperson.

Zwane has extensive experience in the regulatory field and is a member of the National Heritage Council, while Hari has vast experience as an auditor.

Other members of the board included Dr Steven Louw, Sheila Sekitla, Johnny Sexwale, Nozipho Sangweni, Leon-Gert Marincowitz, Thulani Sithole, Cynthia Motau, Timothy Sukazi, Mokgadi Morata and Zola Majavu.

MEC Maile said other key deliverables for the board would include finalising the outstanding bookmaker license applications and ensuring that the industry contributes to revitalising of township economies. – SAnews.gov.za
