Pretoria - Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi will spend the week telling South Africans about the importance of reading.
“The importance of reading in order to achieve success in life is foundational for the individual and essential for nation building and social cohesion,” Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi as the country marks National Book Week, this week.
She said the department’s Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE) strategy recognises the power of the book sector to contribute to job creation, poverty reduction, skills development and, above all, economic growth.
“The National Book Week is a strategic intervention to promote a reading culture that will enhance the prominence and socio-economic impacts of the South African book sector both locally and globally,” Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi said.
National Book Week and Heritage Month activities
On Tuesday, Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi will visit Hihlurile Women’s Co-operative project, funded by the department, through Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE) in Greater Giyani Local Municipality, Limpopo. The project was established to transfer skills and create employment for crafters in the Giyani area.
On Wednesday, the Deputy Minister will hoist the National Flag at Macha Day Care Centre and Megoring Primary School, at Mentz village, Capricorn Municipality- Limpopo. She will also engage with learners about the importance of reading and donate books.
On the same day, she will visit the Molepo Community Library to engage with the communities, educators and learners about the importance of reading as part of National Book Week.
On Thursday, the Deputy Minister will hoist the National Flag at Vleifontein Primary School in Makhado Municipality, Limpopo. The programme is part of the department’s Flag in every school campaign, which seeks to promote national identity, instil the spirit of patriotism, love for South Africa, nation building and social cohesion.
She will also attend the Music Workshop Master Class, King Mphephu Fun Walk and Musangwe as part of the MGE funded Phalaphala FM Royal Heritage Festival.
The Music Workshop Master Class will also be addressed by Selaelo Selota, the Department of Trade and Industry and the South African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO).
