Pretoria - The South African Judiciary is mourning the death of South Gauteng High Court Judge Haseena Mayat who passed away on Monday morning.
Judge Mayat was buried in the evening according to Muslim rites in Newclare, Johannesburg.
“Judges, court management, court staff and members of the profession received the news of her passing with shock.
“Judge Mayat was a very committed jurist and had established herself as one of the pillars of the Division,” said Judge President of the Gauteng Division of the High Court, Danstan Mlambo, on Monday.
“Her quiet demeanour, engaging discourse and decisive manner particularly in tackling difficult cases will be sorely missed by the Division,” Mlambo added.
Mayat was appointed to the bench in 2009.
Her death comes only days after the death of retired Constitutional Court judge Tembile Skweyiya, last week.
Skweyiya was given an official funeral on Saturday. - SAnews.gov.za
