Cabinet expresses confidence in NPA

Pretoria - Cabinet has affirmed its confidence in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to effectively execute its duties as mandated, despite the recent change in its leadership.

“The NPA remains steadfast in its work, and has the relevant structures and systems in place to continue to promote a crime-free society,” Cabinet said in a statement following their fortnightly meetings.

The institution has been faced with eroding public confidence following their bad publicity in recent months.

But despite this in 2014, the organisation improved its conviction rate at all court levels with 93.6 percent (273 641 cases) at district courts.

Conviction rates stood at 76 percent (27 246 cases) at regional courts and 88 percent (911 cases) at all high courts.

Last week, the Presidency announced the appointment of Mashau Silas Ramaite as the new acting head of the NPA.

He replaces Mxolisi Nxasana, who left the office last month after reaching a settlement with President Jacob Zuma.

Ramaite previously served as deputy national director of public prosecutions since 2003 and held a number of positions including as a deputy attorney general in the justice department and an acting attorney general in Thohoyandou.

In the mid-80s to late 90s, he also served in various roles, including as a state advocate, candidate attorney, public prosecutor and a magistrate. - SAnews.gov.za
