SA mourns Singapore's Lee Kuan passsing

Pretoria - The South African government has extended its condolences to the government and people of Singapore following the death of their founding father Lee Kuan Yew.

South Africa paid tribute to Lee Kuan's vision and commitment to building Singapore into a prosperous nation.

“South Africa mourns the death of a great Asian leader who spearheaded the transformation of Singapore from a tiny port city to the prosperous international financial, business and transport hub that it is today,” the Department of International Relations and Cooperation said on Tuesday.

After battling severe pneumonia for nearly one and a half months, Lee Kuan passed away early Monday. He was 91.

Lee Kuan co-founded the ruling People's Action Party and became the prime minister of the newly born republic in 1965. He stepped down as prime Minster in 1990.- SAnews.gov.za
