Task team appointed to investigate NECSA, NRWDI allegations

Pretoria – Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson has appointed a task team to investigate allegations faced by the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA) and the National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute (NRWDI) Boards.

According to Minister Joemat-Pettersson, these challenges hinder on the broader mandate of both institutions.

The investigation was prompted by numerous complaints and allegations levelled against Board members and the Management of both strategic institutions, alleging serious mismanagement in relation to corporate governance and management issues.

Taking into account, the important role played by these institutions as key role players in the nuclear sector, Minister Joemat-Pettersson felt that the concerns raised with her should be addressed and resolved as if left unattended, they may adversely impact on the effectiveness of the Board in overseeing and guiding NECSA and NRWDI operations.

The Task Team will investigate and report back to the Minister on all the allegations.

The members of the task team will include officials from the Department of Energy, the Department of Mineral Resources, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and NERSA (National Energy Regulator of South Africa).  

The Boards of both institutions have been requested to co-operate with the Task Team to carry out its work efficiently and effectively.

The Task Team is expected to conclude its investigation and submit a report to the Minister of Energy on or before the 31 March 2015. – SAnews.gov.za
