Potchefstroom – The South African Defence Force (SANDF) today celebrated Armed Forces Day with many South Africans by demonstrating their capabilities in fire power and equipment.

The day, which was celebrated in Potchefstroom, also showcased career opportunities in the SANDF and other military activities to delight members of the public.

Speaking at the event on Saturday, President Zuma said the success of the Defence Force means safety and security for South Africans, as it exists to protect them.

“We pride ourselves on having established this new, united national defence force out of the divisions and complications of the past.

“In only 20 years, our defence force has become a force for peace and a force of great pride in the country and the continent because of the hard work, dedication and commitment of our soldiers,” he said.

President Zuma called on South Africans to celebrate the soldiers for their contribution to the important task of defending the Republic.

“Our Defence Force performs well both inside the country and externally in support of the country's foreign policy,” he said.

According to Brigadier General Kobus Butler from SANDF, more than 1 200 soldiers took part in this years’ Armed Forces day celebration.

About 80 to 90 military vehicles and about 25 aircrafts took part in the event.

Learners from various schools also attended the event which gave them the opportunity to familiarise them to various opportunities that exist within the SANDF.

Grade 11 learner from a local school, Martin Hartsman, told SAnews that he is considering joining the SANDF after completing matric.

“I want to be a soldier so I can defend and protect my country against terrorism,” he said.

Also in attendance were army representatives from various African countries.

This year’s celebration was held under the theme, A professional and capable defence force for the people of South Africa.

The first Armed Forces Day parade was held in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, in 2013 and in 2014 it was held in Bloemfontein, in the Free State.

According to the SANDF, the Armed Forces Day has five major objectives, to:

  • unite all South Africans behind the country’s defence force;
  • allow the defence force to interact with communities;
  • raise public awareness of the military and its purpose;
  • showcase SANDF capabilities in terms of equipment and technology; and
  • celebrate the defence force’s achievements in both internal and external missions. – SAnews.gov.za
