Pretoria - Cabinet says work to identify the remaining 11 South Africans, who died tragically in the Nigerian building collapse, continues and government is intensifying efforts to ensure their remains are brought home without undue delay.

“It is very sad that we have not as yet succeeded in repatriating the 11 bodies from the State of Lagos. This matter falls exclusively within the jurisdiction of the State of Lagos in Nigeria,” said Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Jeff Radebe.

He was briefing reporters at the last post Cabinet on Thursday held in Pretoria.

He said Lagos was working together with a forensic team in Stellenbosch, South Africa, on DNA samples. As soon as the results are out, government will know when the bodies will be repatriated.

Meanwhile, Minister Radebe said Cabinet is also saddened by the tragic killing of South African teacher, Pierre Korkie, who was in Yemen.

The Minister also extended condolences to the family and friends of Werner Groenewald and his two children, Rode and Jean-Pierre, who died in an attack in Afghanistan. - SAnews.gov.za
