Pretoria - The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has urged motorists to use the R101 as an alternative route as both the north and south bound carriageways of the N1 near Mokopane are still closed to traffic.
Four police officers and a truck driver died in a fatal crash following an explosion on the N1 between Mokopane and Polokwane in Limpopo, on Thursday.
SaNRAL's general communications manager Vusi Mona said: “Due to the severity of the crash, both the north and south bound carriageways in this vicinity are presently closed to traffic.
“The road has been damaged and road users are encouraged to use the R101 road as an alternative route. This road runs parallel to the N1 and it is in a good condition.
“Our investigations and road repairs are in progress. We will be able to inform road users when the work is complete and the N1 is reopened in both directions - possibly over the weekend.
“Sanral wishes to thank all road users for their patience and understanding during this time,” he said. - SAnews.gov.za
