Moscow - The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) has sent relief supplies to the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

“Two Russian emergency airplanes Ilyushin Il-76 will fly from Khabarovsk to the Philippines,” deputy head of the EMERCOM national centre of control in emergency situations, Oleg Voronov, told Itar-Tass on Thursday.

Voronov said the rescuers will deliver relief supplies, including canned meat, fish, and sugar with a total weight of more than 56 tonnes and will bring the Russian tourists back home on the way back from the country.

“There are 11 Russian tourists, who wish to come back to the homeland, arriving to Cebu from different ends of the archipelago of the Philippines,” Voronov said.

He said the work continues and the exact number of Russian tourists will be determined at the site upon arrival of the Russian emergency airplanes.

“Medics and emergency psychologists will be accompanying Russian citizens during the flight to supervise their state of health,” he said.

Voronov noted that the Philippines asked for relief supplies of food products for the typhoon-affected people.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Gift of the Givers Foundation has also given relief to the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The non-profit organisation has released R2 million to purchase essential supplies such as food, water, shelter, blankets and medical supplies for thousands of people left destitute by the super typhoon.

In addition to the funds, Gift of the Givers CEO Imtiaz Sooliman said they were considering deploying a rescue, paramedic and medical team. - Itar-Tass-SAnews.gov.za
