Pretoria - The Gift of the Givers Foundation has started operations to bring relief to the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The non-profit organisation has released R2 million to purchase essential supplies such as food, water, shelter, blankets and medical supplies for thousands of people left destitute by the super typhoon.

In addition to the funds, Gift of the Givers CEO Imtiaz Sooliman said they were considering deploying a rescue, paramedic and medical team.

“Highly-qualified search and rescue personnel with advanced life support and primary health care paramedic skills, as well as medical personnel in general, are welcome to send us their details in the event volunteers are dispatched,” said Sooliman.

He called on South Africans, especially corporates, to donate items including non-perishable foodstuff, new blankets, linen, towels, clothing, pot sets, sanitary towels, disposable nappies and relevant medical supplies, which can be sent to their offices or warehouses. Those who would like to make a donation can call 0800 786 911.

As one of the strongest storms ever to make landfall, super Typhoon Haiyan cut a path of destruction through several central islands across the Philippines, leaving the seaside city of Tacloban in ruins, and killing an estimated 10 000 people.

Haiyan hit the Philippines on Friday and Saturday, the biggest typhoon recorded in almost a century. It has affected nearly 9.8 million people and displaced an estimated 660 000 people. - SAnews.gov.za
