Transnet, labour talks continue tomorrow

Pretoria- Talks between Transnet and labour unions are to resume tomorrow afternoon said the parastatal.

In a statement on Thursday, Transnet said that its scheduled meeting with its two recognised unions namely the United Transport and Allied Trade Union (Utatu) and the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) will resume tomorrow.

"At the request of Satawu, one of the two recognized trade unions, Transnet has agreed to postpone today's meeting with unions to 13h00 tomorrow to enable the unions to canvass the views of their members on the company's settlement offer," said Transnet spokesperson John Dludlu.

The parties were due to meet at 4pm this afternoon in efforts to end the 11-day strike. Unions downed tools last week. The unions were demanding a 15 percent wage increase while the parastatal was offering eight.

Transnet had since upped the offer to 11 percent while unions scaled down their demand to 13 percent.

"Due to the size of Transnet's operations and the geographically dispersed workplaces, more time is needed to effectively communicate the details of Transnet's offer to union members," he said.
However Transnet would not comment on the details of talks.

"As a result of this request, we will only be in a position to give a full report on the details of the negotiations after that meeting. Until then, Transnet will not comment on the details of the talks to ensure that the process is given every chance to succeed," he said.

The unions could not be immediately be reached for comment
