Eskom has welcomed the convictions in the Kusile Power Station corruption case, adding that it continues to advance actions to fight fraud and corruption.
“Eskom welcomes the convictions of former contractor Michael Lomas and businessman Hudson Kgomoeswana in relation to historical procurement irregularities and corruption linked to the Kusile Power Station project. Eskom notes this outcome as another important milestone in the ongoing and unrelenting efforts to hold accountable those who sought to unlawfully enrich themselves through the misuse of public funds,” it said.
Eskom acknowledged the extensive and collaborative work between Eskom, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders whose efforts contributed to securing these convictions.
“The organisation remains an active participant in coordinated initiatives led through the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS), the Energy Safety and Security Priority Committee and other government-led structures established to combat fraud, corruption, theft and related criminal activities,” it said in a statement on Friday.
It said the partnerships continue to strengthen information-sharing, investigative capacity and law-enforcement coordination in support of arrests, prosecutions and convictions where evidence supports such action.
“This matter forms part of several historical procurement irregularities and corruption cases that have been the subject of investigation and legal proceedings. While these matters relate to conduct that occurred in previous years, Eskom continues to strengthen its governance framework, procurement oversight, internal controls and investigative capabilities as part of its broader turnaround and long-term sustainability objectives.
“The organisation also remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at recovering losses arising from fraud and corruption, where appropriate, and in accordance with applicable legal processes,” it explained.
In addition, Eskom recognised that the majority of its employees discharge their responsibilities with integrity and professionalism.
“The organisation will continue to take decisive action against any individual found to have engaged in fraud, corruption or related criminal conduct,” it said. -SAnews.gov.za
