SA, India ripe for more investment: Gordhan

Sunday, October 3, 2010

Durban - Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said South Africa and India should brace for more business activity as investors take note of the human capital and currencies of developing nations.

He was addressing a business session during the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Africa India Diaspora Conference, held in Durban on Saturday.

He urged the two countries to investigate further the potential that exists for investment and business opportunities.

Gordhan said the economy is projected to grow by 4 to 6.7 percent in the next few years and countries like India, China and Brazil will largely be responsible for the growth.

However, he cautioned that fair trade conditions needed to be observed in order to avoid a repeat of the recent global recession, adding that the right balance must be struck between global and national interests.

The PBD conference, co-hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal government and Ministry of Overseas Indians Affairs, is aimed at strengthening ties between Africa and India.

It coincides with the 150 anniversary of the arrival of Indians in the country.
