Smiles, tears, hugs in 'big school'

Johannesburg - The day got off to an emotional start at Margaret Gwele Primary School in Dobsonville, Soweto, this morning where many Grade 1's started school.

Dressed in her brand new school uniform, Anathi Zondo smiled brightly as her mom, Zanele, accompanied her to her desk as per instructions written on the blackboard.

However, as soon as she was alone, the little girl slumped glumly in her chair, not sure of what the day held in store for her. A reassuring father quickly came to her aid and she cheered up immediately.

Although Siyanda Mqhayi had made a few friends shortly after arriving at the school, this was little comfort to his mother.

"I'm more nervous than him because school is the most important step in his life...here he has to face up to his strengths, weaknesses, interests and who he is socially," said mother Thandeka.

School principal Peace Moeketi told BuaNews that operations at the school had gone off smoothly, although there had been some late registration from parents who have moved their kids from other schools or provinces.
