Poor schools receive book donations

Thohoyandou - Five impoverished schools in the rural area of Thohoyandou in Limpopo have each received R10 000 worth of school books and cleaning materials.

The donations form part of the government's annual "Go Back To School" campaign, which aims to encourage learners to resume their studies with vigour from day one of the school year.

"We want encourage learners and educators to start teaching and learning with immediate effect to promote quality education among learners, educators and communities," said spokesperson for the municipality, Moss Shibambu.

The donations are sponsored by the Vhembe District Municipality, Polokwane-based Venda radio station Phalaphala FM and Musengavhadzimu Business Consultants.

Executive Mayor of Thohoyandou, Councillor Falaza Mdaka, handed over the books and cleaning materials to two of the schools on Wednesday. They included Thase Secondary School in Magodi village and Dengenya Secondary School in Dzingahe village.

The Mayor is expected to visit various other schools over the next few days to ensure that learning in the 2010 academic year gets off to a good start.
