ohannesburg - The Gauteng Provincial Office's police team have been recognised as the top cops for 2009.

Captain Lee Wood and his team became the centre of attention as they scooped the Star of the Stars Award on Thursday during a ceremony attended by National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele.

The team walked away with trophies and R1000 in vouchers each, after successfully making a number of arrests through Crime Line tip offs called in by the public.

Crime Line, initiated by Primedia three years ago, is supported by various partners, including the Department of Police, SABC, DSTV and various businesses.

Through the programme, members of the public are able to report any criminal activity they witness in their surroundings.

Wood's team was responsible for the arrests of individuals dealing with drugs, the possession of firearms, stolen vehicles and the recovery of R1.4 million worth of illegal goods last year.

"2009 was a difficult year but we are looking forward to protecting the public and ensuring their safety during 2010 World Cup. If you don't want to do time, don't do crime," Wood warned..

He further acknowledged support from Cele saying that it boosts their morale.

Cele praised all policemen and women for their hard work and dedication.

"Bravo to the police, you are all stars and it always feels good to have bright shining stars. Go out there and do your job," he urged.
