Mafikeng - People over the age of 60 got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity today, to take part in a series of competitive, but fun, track-and-field events, at the Mmabatho stadium.

The North West Golden Games, which is the first of a kind to be held in the province, are aimed at encouraging the aged to participate in physical exercises, while improving integration between population groups.

Participants were mostly community members who were already active in service centres and clubs for the elderly throughout the province.

One of the participants, Emily Ramogale, 63, of Ramotshere Moilwa Local Municipality in Dithakwana said she enjoyed the games as well as interacting with other people her age.

The event, which is a partnership between the provincial Departments of Sports, Arts and Culture and Social Development, is also used to recruit people for the many social and relief programmes.

The national Golden Games would be held next month in the Eastern Cape.
