Pretoria - Transport Minister Sbusiso Ndebele has conveyed his condolences after three children drowned in KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend.

According to media, the three died as a result of a pedal boat that capsized.

"We want to covey our condolences to the family who lost three children in a tragic drowning incident involving a rented boat on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal yesterday," said Ndebele on Monday.

The South African Maritime Safety Agency (SAMSA), which is an agency of the department, is investigating this incident.

"As we head towards the December holidays, thousands of people will engage in various activities at the sea, rivers and dams. SAMSA will be intensifying its Water Safety Programme in order to raise awareness with regards to legal compliance as well as behaviour of those engaging in water-related activities, "said Minister Ndebele.
