Pretoria - Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is this morning visiting schools around Pretoria as part of government's school monitoring process.

The Deputy President is accompanied by Education Minister Angie Motshekga and Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy.

The schools include Soshanguve Technical High School's satellite campus, Soshanguve Technical High School's main campus and Memezelo High School.

Last week, Motlanthe also visited schools in the Eastern Cape that had performed dismally in last year's matric exams.

Announcing a 60.6 percent matric pass rate earlier this month, Motshekga said the department would be taking urgent steps to ensure the National Senior Certificate system is improved.

At the time, she said subjects like Mathematics, Physical Science and Accounting would be given more attention this year.

All nine provincial Education MECs are expected to hold a special Council of Education Ministers (CEM) meeting in February to discuss the technical report of the 2009 National Senior Certificate results.

Issues to be discussed at the meeting include provincial reports on the performance and challenges in the 2009 National Certificate Examinations and proposed interventions to support the implementation of the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) in Grades 10 and 12.
