Pretoria - The Gauteng Department of Education has suspended a Meadowlands Secondary School Principal, Moss Senye for assaulting a student.

Senye and his co-accused Fancy Phehle were found guilty of assaulting a 17-year-old learner in February last year. The boy was allegedly slapped and kicked for being disruptive in class.

"They were given a sanction of two months suspension without pay, as well as a final written warning, the educators did not appeal their conviction and sanction," said department spokesperson Charles Phahlane.

Their suspension started on 1 June and will end on 31 July 2012.

Phahlane reiterated the warning that the department would deal decisively with non-adherence to policy on corporal punishment.

He further encouraged learners, who were assaulted at school to report the incident to the school or district office, and inform their parents so that they can open a criminal case.
