Matrics writing English paper

Pretoria - Matriculants throughout the country are today writing their second English paper.

As the third week of examinations begins to draw to a close, learners have already written major subjects like Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy, History, Afrikaans, Economics, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Siswati, isiNdebele and a range of other languages.

Yesterday the department said no irregularities of a nature that threatens the integrity of its processes have occurred so far. Only minor technical and administrative challenges have been reported.

The department described this year's exams as the largest examination conducted in South Africa since 1996, with more than 642 000 candidates enrolled.

The exams will end on 3 December 2010 and all provinces have reported readiness for the commencement of marking.

The results will be announced on 6 January 2011.
