Pretoria - A Gauteng school teacher is in hot water after he was allegedly caught printing child pornography on school facilities.

The Head of the Gauteng Department of Education has issued a precautionary suspension against the teacher at Laerskool Brentwoodpark.

Spokesperson Charles Phahlane said such behavior posed a potential risk to learners at the school. He could not say when the teacher was expected to face a disciplinary hearing on the matter.

"All I can tell you right now is that charges are being drawn up and the person will be informed of them," Phahlane said.

The department viewed sexual misconduct in schools in an extremely serious light and has accordingly taken a decision to review all cases where allegations of sexual or racial abuse have been made, he added.

The aim was to ensure that such cases were properly prepared and prosecuted.

Possession of child pornography is a criminal offence and if convicted perpetrators often face a lengthy jail time.
