Pretoria - Motor trade sales in November 2010 increased by 15.7 percent, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Thursday.

Estimates for the three months ended November 2010 showed a 15.7 percent increase when compared to the three months ended November 2009, when sales decreased by 6.4 percent.

Stats SA attributed the majority of the increase to new vehicle sales (30 percent - contributing 7.1 percent), fuel sales (13.8 percent - contributing 3.4 percent) as well as used vehicle sales (15.9 percent - contributing 3 percent).

"Motor trade sales rose by 18.1 percent year-on-year in November 2010, the twelfth consecutive positive growth rate recorded since December 2009," said Stats SA.

Additionally on Thursday, Stats SA released wholesale trade sales at current prices in November 2010, which increased by 13.6 percent compared to November 2009.

"Wholesale trade sales, at current prices, for the three months ended November 2010 increased by 10.3 percent compared with the three months ended November 2009. The major contributors to this increase were dealers in solid, liquid and gaseous fuels and related products and dealers in food, beverages and tobacco," said Stats SA.
