SA companies to showcase products at Peru mining convention

South African companies will showcase their products at the weeklong mining convention in Peru.

Eighteen South African exporters of mining equipment and related services will display their products at the 2017 Perumin Mining Convention, which gets underway today in Arequipa, Peru.

Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies says the convention will expose South African companies to export opportunities not only in Peru, but in the South American region as a whole.

“The convention will further expose South African companies to available trade and investment opportunities and will be a good platform to promote South African exhibitors to potential customers in order to obtain new business and penetrate new markets,” said Minister Davies.

The convention takes place bi-annually and brings together the world’s leading technology and services in the mining and metals sector.

South Africa’s participation will focus on machinery, equipment, technologies, services and supplies for the mining sector.

The participation of the companies in the weeklong exhibition is through the Department of Trade and Industry’s Export Marketing and Investment Assistance (EMIA).

The objective of the scheme is to develop export markets for South African products and services and to recruit new foreign direct investment into the country.

Minister Davies said trade relations between South Africa and the South American country are significant. The South Africa-Peru Chamber of Commerce (SAPCHAM) in Lima will present opportunities to increase trade for both countries.

South Africa recognises the huge potential of the Latin American group of countries and is cognisant of the fact that Peru is one of the fastest growing economies in the region.

The convention will conclude on 25 September.

Black Industrialists seek opportunities in Uganda

Meanwhile, the dti is also leading a group of black industrialists on a trade mission that gets underway in Uganda today.

The group jetted off to the landlocked East African country on Sunday.

During the weeklong trade and investment mission, black industrialists will market their products, while also seeking out investment opportunities.

The mission consists of export-ready black industrialists operating in the economic infrastructure, agro-processing, electronics, as well as textiles, footwear and leather sectors.

Durban-based agro-processing company, Nutri SA’s Managing Director, Christopher Masina, said he is optimistic that the mission to Uganda will yield positive results for his company.

“Our mission for travelling to Uganda is to seek a new market for our products, as well as look for any business opportunities that we can explore in Uganda. We are excited to be part of this mission and we hope that it will go a long way in assisting us to find a market to which we can export our products,” said Masina

The mission to Uganda is part of the implementation of the Black Industrialists Programme (BIP). The programme is aimed at promoting industrialisation, sustainable economic growth and transformation through the financial and non-financial support of black-owned entities in the manufacturing sector. The BIP is anchored on three pillars, namely access to capital, access to markets and non-financial support.

The mission to Uganda, which will conclude on Saturday, is the third that the dti has arranged for black industrialists after missions to Nigeria in September 2016 and Namibia in June this year.

World Food Moscow International Food Exhibition

Businesspeople, who participated in the recently concluded World Food Moscow International Food Exhibition, said Russia is abound with trade opportunities.

The participation of the businesspeople in the weeklong fair, which concluded last Friday, was funded by the dti with the aim of helping them acquire an export market in Russia and other counties.

“The Russian market showed interest in South African wines and this would help expand our wines footprint in Russia. We made contacts with big wine importers and we are confident we will do business with them, expand business and create jobs,” said Managing Director of Thandi Wines, Vernon Henn.
