Vote of confidence for Banyana

Thursday, November 11, 2010

Pretoria - Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula expressed his confidence that Banyana Banyana will beat Equatorial Guinea this afternoon to reach the finals of the CAF African Women's Championship.

Banyana are set to clash against the defending champions in a semi-final match to kick-off at 3:30pm at Daveyton's Sinaba Stadium this afternoon.

"We wish them well as they prepare to engage Equatorial Guinea this afternoon. We are confident that they will make the country proud by reaching the finals and ultimately lifting that glorious trophy, which will see them representing us in the Women's World Cup next year," he said.

Equatorial Guinea finished top of Group B with seven points from two wins and a draw, while Banyana finished on the second spot of Group A with six points from two wins and one loss.

This is a crucial match for both teams, as those who will emerge victorious will automatically qualify to represent the continent at the FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany next June.

As a host of the same tournament in 2008, Equatorial Guinea beat the host nation 2-1 at the same stage of the show piece.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria are currently waiting for the winner between South Africa and Equatorial Guinea after they tore apart Cameroon 5-1 at an earlier semi-final match played at Sinaba Stadium.
