Pretoria - OR International Airport has earned itself the prestigious title of best airport in Africa at an awards ceremony in Denmark.
The airport received the award at the World Airport Awards held in Copenhagen recently. The awards were based on 11.38 million survey questionnaires that were completed by over 100 different nationalities of airline passengers in 2010/11. It covered over 240 airports across the world.
"This is a proud moment for the entire airport community and we would like to sincerely thank our passengers for this honour. But more importantly, I would like to pay homage to the men and women who work tirelessly behind the scenes at all Airports Company South Africa airports," General Manager at the airport Christopher Hlekane said.
"This award signifies yet another important milestone for the airport just months after South Africa successfully hosted the FIFA 2010 World Cup."
Hlekane said the World Cup showcased the airport as a gateway for any major African event.
"The award ceremony also recognises that this airport, including key airports in the ACSA network, can compete comfortably with the best facilities in the world. That is good news not only for ACSA but for South Africa as a travel destination of choice," he said.
The airport was also acknowledged amongst three airports of the most improved airports worldwide. The award follows a year after the airport officially opened its Central Terminal Building in April 2009 following the successful completion of the multibillion rand infrastructure development programme.
The World Airport Survey was established in 1999, and is held in high esteem for clarity of process and rigorously applied rules of total independence. The results are based on unsolicited customer survey responses, with no subscription or membership required for an airport to be included. - BuaNews
