Two Mpumalanga doctors to be probed

Pretoria - Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has ordered a probe into the conduct of two Mpumalanga doctors to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of a teenage mother at Evander Hospital.

The Department of Health on Thursday said it is alleged that the two doctors have disregarded the protocols and clinical guidelines during the examination of a teen pregnant mother at the hospital a week ago.

“We regard the alleged conduct of these doctors as serious as they point to gross negligence and therefore an investigation must be launched to determine facts before an appropriate action is taken," Motsoaledi said.

The department said the Mpumalanga Department of Health on Monday served the pair with notice of intention to suspend them, affording them the opportunity to make representations within 24 hours as to why a precautionary suspension should not be implemented.

The department said the two doctors were on Wednesday subsequently placed on precautionary suspension, pending the outcome of the investigation.

“The precautionary suspension is based on the seriousness of the allegations levelled against the two doctors, and the department believes that their presence at work might jeopardize the probe into the alleged misconduct,” said the department. - SAnews.gov.za
