Sentencing in Mido Macia trial expected today

Wednesday, November 11, 2015

Pretoria - The High Court in Pretoria is this morning expected to pass a sentence against eight former policemen, who have been convicted of killing Mozambican taxi driver Mido Macia.

The 27-year-old Macia was found dead in a holding cell at Daveyton Police Station after being dragged through the streets and handcuffed to the back of a police van in February 2013.

Macia had been arrested for an alleged traffic violation but died hours after being detained.

His post mortem found he had been severely beaten and died due to a lack of oxygen.

The eight policemen -- Meshack Malele (46), Thamsamqa Mgema (35), Percy Jonathan Mnisi (26), Bongamusa Mdluli (25), Sipho Sydwell Ngobeni (30), Lungisa Gwababa (31), Bongani Kolisi (27) and Linda Sololo (56) -- had all pleaded not guilty.

However, the court found the policemen guilty of killing Macia, with Judge Bert Bam rejecting their testimony, saying he was satisfied that the State had been able to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. - SAnews.gov.za
