SA man extradited to UK on murder charge

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

Pretoria - A South African man, who is wanted in the United Kingdom (UK) for the murder of a six-year-old child, will be extradited to that country on Tuesday.

George Champion Sithole will be handed over to British police officers by their South African counterparts and flown out to the UK later today, the South African Police Services (SAPS) said.

Sithole is wanted in the UK for the murder of Dumoluhle Sibanda. In October 2004, an arsonist poured petrol on and set alight the home Dumoluhle shared with her family in Crawley, West Sussex. While the adults managed to escape unharmed, Dumoluhle died as a result of the fire.

Three days later Sithole fled to South Africa. He was on the run for six years until SAPS tracked him down and arrested him in Jeppe, Johannesburg in March 2010.

In February this year he was found to be extraditable and Justice Minister Jeff Radebe and ordered his surrender in terms of the extradition law to the British authorities.

The Fugitive Extradition Unit of Interpol within SAPS will hand over Sithole to police officers sent by the British authorities. He will be extradited from the OR Tambo International Airport.
