Pretoria - The R60 million electricity distribution substation in the North West is set to be completed by the end of May.

The substation will provide electricity to 3 000 new housing units, which will be built in Tlhabologang township near Coligny.

This was announced by North West Premier Thandi Modise, who was accompanied by Ditsobotla mayor Lesego Holele and Eskom Provincial General Manager Philistas Khumalo, before switching on electricity to celebrate the delivery of a R36-million electrification project, which has benefitted 1 830 households in the township.

“We will expedite investigations into the leasing of the land that was bought for the housing development to commence,” the Premier said on Monday evening.

“With the delivery of 49 634 new electricity connections in our province over the past five years, we have a good story to tell that says: Twenty years of freedom and democracy have indeed improved the quality of life of our people, including evicted former farm workers. South Africa is a better place to live in than it was 20 years ago,” added Modise.

“We were grateful for the houses but with the delivery of electricity, life will be a lot easier and reduce incidents of fire disasters caused by candles,” said an overjoyed 83-year-old widow and mother of eight, Maria Mogatwe.

Another recipient and mother of two, Lydia Pitso (34), said that cooking, ironing and other house chores will be a lot easier. – SAnews.gov.za
