President Zuma extends condolences to families of Imbali crash

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma says law enforcement agencies will get to the bottom of the incident that occurred in Imbali, Pietermaritzburg, where seven school children died when a bakkie reportedly crashed into a house.

"We are always deeply saddened at the loss of lives and are more saddened [if] it is young lives that have been lost in this manner. The pain felt by the families is immeasurable,” said the President.

President Zuma reiterated the importance for drivers to use proper, lawful and roadworthy vehicles when transporting passengers, especially children. He urged drivers to exercise maximum caution at all times.

The Presidency said President Zuma expressed shock, sadness and outrage when he received the news.

It was reported that the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when the learners were transported to their homes, after school.

Media reported that other injured learners, the driver and a woman were admitted in hospital on the day.

“On behalf of government and the people of South Africa, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to all those who were injured. May the souls of the departed children rest in peace," said President Zuma. - SAnews.gov.za
