President expresses sadness over Prof Botman's death

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma has expressed his sadness at the passing of Professor Russel Botman, the Vice Chancellor of Stellenbosch University and one of the pioneers of transformation in higher education.

"South Africa has lost one of the leading lights of our higher education transformation,” said President Zuma on Sunday.

“On behalf of government and all our people, we wish to convey our deepest condolences to his family and the whole of the academic community. May his soul rest in peace.”

Among his achievements, Professor Botman became the first black South African Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University, in the Western Cape, in 2002.

He passed away in his sleep at his home in Stellenbosch, on Friday night. He was 60-years-old. - SAnews.gov.za
