New beginning for Lephalale families

Monday, July 25, 2016

Pretoria - The lives of three families in Lephalale have changed for the better after they were given new homes.

Communications Minister Faith Muthambi handed over the furnished homes to the families when she visited Lephalale this weekend. The families had been living in informal dwellings.

One of the beneficiaries is 52-year-old Moshidi Madibana. She was living with her 14 children and grandchildren in a one-roomed shack with a leaking roof.

Minister Muthambi first encountered these families when she visited Lephalale in November last year during National Imbizo Focus Week. Moved by their living conditions, she vowed to help change the lives of these families by bringing their plight to the attention of the relevant government departments.

“Our government is deeply committed to fighting the scourge of poverty, inequality and unemployment. We know that good quality housing improves the lives and health of people. Children who live in a decent house are less prone to falling sick, their confidence is higher and they perform better at school.

“A good house is the start they need to achieve great things in life. As government, what we wanted to do for these families is to not change their lives for this weekend only but to change their lives sustainably and for the long-term,” Minister Muthambi said.
