Pretoria - Since the start of the festive season in December, six drunk drivers have been arrested through intensified law enforcement operations in the Northern Cape.
Transport, Safety and Liaison HOD Steven Jonkers said they remained committed to zero tolerance for lawlessness and operations will continue to be in full swing to curb any elements of lawlessness, with the focus on keeping road users safe.
“Since the start of the festive season, we have stopped and checked 6 441 vehicles across the province with operations unfolding continuously.
“Without wavering, 856 summonses have been issued for various offences such as failing to buckle up, which are crucial not only in road safety but saving the lives of our people on the roads,” he said.
Jonkers said two vehicles have been discontinued, six vehicles impounded and 50 high speeds recorded with the highest speed of 109km/h in an 80Km/h zone recorded in Calvinia.
“The operation statistics are evident that the full might of our traffic operations are unfolding and we are committed to checking vehicles in and from out of the province. We are applying the law according to the infringements on the road and this will not change.
“We appreciate the support we have received from the transport fraternity and we call on others including our community members to join hands in working together with government as road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.
