Motorists warned of road closures in city

Tuesday, December 10, 2013

Pretoria – Government has urged the residents of Tshwane and motorists to take note of the road closures that will be in place in the city from Wednesday to Friday between 5am and 9am.

This is to allow for the cortège of former President Nelson Mandela to pass through from 1 Military Hospital to the Union Buildings, where his body will be lying-in-state.

The way-procession will be as follows:

-          From 1 Military Hospital on Old Pretoria Road proceeding to join Kgosi Mampuru Street (former Potgieter Street)

-          The procession will continue along Kgosi Mampuru Street until the intersection of Madiba Street (former Vermeulen Street)

-          The procession will then proceed  in the eastern direction towards the Union Buildings

Motorists and residents are warned that the above mentioned roads and all crossing inter-sections will be closed by the Tshwane Metro Police daily from 5am and not later than 9am, for the procession.

The public should note that all the roads adjacent to the Union Buildings will be closed to traffic during the three- day period. The Jan Smuts Drive (Old Johannesburg Road) will be closed from the off-ramp to Eufees Road and the N14 freeway from Eufees Road.

“The public is advised to use alternative routes and not to travel through the CBD during the above-mentioned times,” said a statement issued by the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS).

Selected sections of the route will be reopened once the area has been cleared by security personnel.

Members of the public are urged to line up the routes and form a public guard of honour for Madiba when the remains are transported.

Strict security will be in place along the route and at the Nelson Mandela Amphitheatre at the Union Buildings where Madiba’s body will be on view.

Members of the public will be allowed to file past the body from midday to 5:30pm. On Thursday and Friday, the public will have access to casket from 8am to 5.30pm.

The public is not required to get accreditation to view the body of the struggle icon. – SAnews.gov.za
